In the U.S., people are constantly relocating from one place to another. There are reasons for this move one of which is the state of the economy. During last year’s global financial crisis, many people considered moving to a new place in order to ease their financial burden.

Portland, Maine’s largest city, has been an attraction for those thinking of relocating to an urban area that has lots to offer its residents and with an environment so close to nature as well. With an estimated population of 64,000 as of 2007, this metropolitan area is the center of cultural, social and economic activities in Maine. In fact, Oregon’s Portland was named after this great city.

Portland’s economy remains to be strong. But despite being a metropolitan area, traffic is not a problem and residents are friendly as well as hardworking. Housing is not an issue what with the presence of affordable homes and rental units such as apartments.

People who’d like to migrate to a booming urban center will not regret going to Portland. As the city is known for its wonderful historical landmarks and other commercial areas, tourism development is on the upswing here. Structures here are a mix of the old and historic architecture as well as the modern tall buildings. These view people can marvel at while strolling along the city’s waterfront.

Additionally, the general environment in Portland, Maine is very relaxing as it is situated between the ocean and a mountain. Outdoor loving people will surely enjoy this coastal city especially those who like the waterfront. Indeed a most ideal place to relocate for families because here, they can take advantage of both a city life and a natural environment at the same time.

In terms of education, families with children still going to school will be able to take advantage of the Portland Public School District considered to be Maine’s largest school system. The city boasts of seven public high schools and four colleges and universities which only means that new residents have a wide choice when it concerns the education of their kids until the tertiary level.

Employment wise, a website dedicated to working in the U.S. highly recommends the area as one of the Best Cities to Live In for mid-level professionals. Employmentspot.com ranked Portland in Maine in third place citing that the

city is a popular relocation destination for people coming from the largest east coast cities. It added that the numerous career opportunities available here is one of its main attractions.

In another development, Portland is included in the Top 100 Places to Live in 2009 of Relocate America.com. It is also one of the safest and culturally attractive cities in the entire United States. Additionally, it is a top destination for doing business owing to its progressive economic status.

With these considerations in mind, there’s no reason why Maine’s Portland will not continue to attract people from other parts of the country and even the world. While the other cities have become too expensive, this one provides an easygoing lifestyle for people and their families.
